Retired Army officer and VMI graduate. I have collected chess sets from around the world over a 28 year active duty career. In 2001, I happened to find that Frontline Figures had designed and produced 54mm metal VMI cadets based on the painting that hangs in Jackson Memorial Hall. I contacted them, and asked if they had given any thought to manufacturing a chess set based on the Battle of New Market. They were not interested. The end result, I made one myself using figures from Frontline, Britains, Imrie Risley, Shenandoah Miniatures and some that I casted and hand painted myself. The final product was a unique, original War Between the States chess set featuring the VMI cadets. The Union troops in the set are flagged under the 54th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. I originally wanted to have as the King and Queen replicas of the Stonewall Jackson statue and Virginia Mourning Her Dead, but these were not available. I found an artist that would reproduce these two famous statues and have commissioned him to do so. The first, Stonewall Jackson, will be available in the summer of 2010. Future chess sets will have these figures. |
